Six steps carry a piece from the first constraint to the last night it is open. The same people are on all six.
None get skipped, and nothing is discovered on site that a screen could have caught months earlier. The piece that opens is the piece that was agreed.
Brief
The site, the audience, the budget, the calendar. Each one pinned down before a line is drawn, because a piece like this is built out of its constraints rather than in spite of them.
Design
The piece is modelled at true scale with the structure resolved - loads, spans, fixings, sightlines. If it cannot stand up and cannot be rigged, it is not a design yet.
Previsualisation
It is lit and run before anything is built. Cues, movement and colour are made against the real geometry, so the look is agreed on a screen rather than argued about on site.
Documentation
Drawings, plots, load tables and patch, issued as one package that agrees with the model and with itself. A crew who have never seen the piece can build it from the package alone.
Systems
Sensing, sound, light and control are built and tested against the model, not improvised in the last week. This is where a structure stops being a structure and starts answering the room.
Install and show
Rigging, focus, programming, and running it every night it is open - then striking it. Whoever drew it is standing behind it at four in the morning.
